Drug Side Effects
Drug side effects are numerous and
varied, depending on the drug itself and the interaction
of the drug with other drugs and substances in a person's
body; drug side effects may range in severity from major
to minor, and some may even be life threatening. Drug
side effects are always important to be aware of, whether
the drug is illicit or a prescription drug that is given
by your family physician. Most prescription drug side
effects can be fully explained by your local pharmacist.
Once known, it is important to monitor an individual
taking these drugs so that if harmful drug side effects
occur, the person can be shown appropriate needed medical
attention and treatment.
Some general, common drug side effects
may include:
· Headache
· Nausea
· Dry Mouth
· Fatigue
· Diarrhea
These are minor drug side effects
that have little or no long effect on a person. However,
there are more intense side effects that occur from
other drugs such as infertility, blood clots, or birth
defects. These types of negative drug side effects that
cause long-lasting damage and may have permanent consequences
are not necessarily common, and are avoided at all costs
through proper assessment and education on the drugs
themselves.
One of the negative drug side effects
of both illicit and prescription drugs that may occur
is addiction to the drugs by the person who is taking
them. This is especially common with many painkillers,
stimulants, and some psychiatric drugs. When addiction
occurs, a person may show both mental and physiological
dependencies upon the substance. This is one of many
serious drug side effects, especially since the life
of the individual can be drastically altered and the
person may not be able function properly without the
use of the drug. Many times, this addiction can cause
seriously disruptions in a person's career, family life,
or relationships with friends.
When one of the drug side effects
includes addiction, treatment may be necessary to help
overcome the individual free themselves from their dependency.
Several methods of drug treatment exist. One of the
most successful types of drug abuse treatment programs
is a short-term residential facility, usually three
to six weeks. Clients in a residential drug abuse treatment
centers often follow the program with sober living homes
or additional outpatient programs to ensure the achievement
of recovery.
